2019 Saturday — Tiny Home Expo

For the past 6 or 8 years I have been following the Tiny Home movement — from a distance. I don’t think I could live in one, but I find the concept interesting and I admire the folks who are doing it.

So when we drove through SLO (San Luis Obispo) on our way to the coast Thursday afternoon, I saw the advertisement at the Madonna Inn and the exhibition grounds filling with models. That was when I said to Mr. Fun that I thought we ought to go to it. So we did.

The real motivation behind the Expo is a new provision made by the city of SLO to increase the availability of affordable housing by encouraging homeowners to consider adding a tiny home (with wheels) (400 sq ft or less, not counting the loft) to their existing lot if they have space on their lot. The city officials think it is a win-win situation because homeowners can add income to their property without adding property tax to the land and people who need affordable housing would have better potential of finding it.

In California, the cities of Fresno, SLO, and Los Angeles are the three looking into this possibility to add some affordable housing to their cities. Many more cities should be considering it.

So that’s part of what we did this Saturday. We also took the 3 pups to Tidelands Park in the late afternoon to walk. The bay was beautiful, but I’m blipping about the Tiny Home Expo because I want to save that memory.
