Soulac sur Mer

This is the seaside town of Soulac-sur-Mer viewed from the north side.

In the foreground you can see the 'digues' or dykes which were constructed in the 1840s to stabilise the coast and stop the advancement of the sea. They are still doing their job today. A consequence of these dykes is the formation of swimming 'pools' filled with natural seawater. These are still used by bathers today as they offer a calm and safe swimming environment for adults and children.
In the extras you can see the remains of the railway track which was constructed to bring the large concrete blocks to the site. Part of this railway line now remains and is used for tourist trains in summer.
There is currently a lot of work going on in Soulac itself to remodel the promenade and reinforce the sea defences. In the main shot you can see the shell of 'Le Signal' apartment block which I have blipped before. This is due to be demolished this winter and is a casualty of the encroaching sea.
