supper time
My daughter-in-law spends 5 hours a day as surrogate mother to 167 calves. They are removed from their mothers before they suckle but the colostrum is taken from the cow and given to them immediately before they are fed full milk from the dairy and have to be taught how to suckle from the feeders. After a few days they are fed calf formula - powdered milk with additives. Their pens are well covered with straw and after their feed they gallop around, kicking and jumping with great energy and high spirits. (My phone wouldn't catch the speed) This is a well run farm with excellent animal care but it is worth remembering and appreciating what goes on to produce the milk you use.
