The Skater and the Birthday Boy
My daughter and S-I-L were both working, so Lisa and I took Merrick to a birthday party at a roller rink. The birthday boy is the son of our youth director at church, so a lot of our church kids were there.
Merrick was insistent that he was not going to skate, because when he tried it last year it didn't go well. But, after watching the rest of the kids...he did. He struggled at first, but we rented him a "cart" to assist him. I didn't want to tell him, but he looked like one of us senior citizens pushing a walker. He enjoyed the skating part so much that he skipped the pizza lunch.
I was SOOOO tempted to lace up some skates. I was a real terror on wheels when I was in my early teens, but c'mon...that was 50 years ago! I got an image of them making me stand up in church tomorrow to show everybody my broken wrist...so I stayed on the sidelines. To this day, roller skating is the reason for my only broken bone. When I was 12 (being a real skating terror), I landed on my elbow, and was in a cast for 5-6 weeks.
I wonder if the skating would have been like riding a bike. Could I have just put them on and started to roll? Could I have put them on and started to rock?
I guess we'll never know.
