The thing about "film noir" images, I suppose, is that if they don't exactly TELL a story, useful ones provoke the viewer into IMAGINING one. We see the image and we start speculating about "what happened before" or "what's gonna happen next". That is the test I think. Never really tried to put my finger on it before.
