The farm work must go on.....

It has been wet here today, although this afternoon has been a lot wetter than this morning. As I was going out in the ute to get today's photo, it was pouring down, along with thunder and lightning.

Despite the rain, farm work still needs to be done. Farmerboy went out this afternoon to wash the vat after the tanker had been, and shift the effluent spreader. One job leads onto another - next I see him in his tractor topping a paddock.

Paddock's get topped for several reasons. The first is obvious - to keep the weeds under control; the second is to get rid of the storky grass that has gone to seed; and the third is so the grass grows back nice and lush. Cows love to eat fresh lush grass; putting cows in a paddock like this usually means they will produce more milk solids in their milk, than if they were in a paddock with old rank storky grass. And as we get paid on how many milk solids our cows produce, it makes sense to give the cows the best possible grass that we can grow.

I do hope the Canterbury area is getting some of this rain - they certainly need it to lower the high fire risk they have at the moment.
