Piton De La Fournaise

Today, my friends and I went to the Piton De La Fournaise! It is one of the most active volcanos in the world, having last erupted last month! It is over 2,600 metres high, making it one of the highest points in the Indian Ocean. We set off at 6am which meant that I'm suffering a bit now but it was worth it to see the views before the clouds set in! We got a great view of the Piton des Neiges, which is the tallest mountain on the island and which I will be climbing next week.

The hike we chose to do took about 5 hours in total and took us from the bottom right up to the top of the volcano, overlooking the newly formed crater which happened as a result of a large eruption in 2007. My legs took a bit of a beating, but I feel a lot more prepared for the Piton des Neiges next week!
