Surabaya, Indonesia

The country’s second city (2.7 million) is not  geared to tourism.

We were welcomed by lovely dancers (but cameras were steamed up because of the humidity.)

Three of us (thank goodness) hired a taxi for a tour of the town. He didn’t speak English (allegedly) but he was armed with a translation app.

We certainly saw the city but it wasn’t a tour. It was fascinating but when we decided to head back, it wasn’t so easy. He was determined we ought to visit the Mall for shopping.

In frustration, I wound down the window and called over to another taxi driver. I asked him, PLEASE, to tell our guy to take us back to the ship.

I loved it. We saw the contrasts between the seriously poor areas and their attempts to emulate Singapore. It was fun - when we knew we were going to the port.)

A cheap adventure, less than £3 a head......
