Piton des Neiges

I finished my exams yesterday so, to celebrate, myself and a few friends are climbing the Piton Des Neiges. This is known as the hardest hike on the island and is also the highest point in the Indian Ocean. It is a 3 million year old volcano which last erupted 27,000 years ago. We woke up this morning at around 7am, took 4 buses and finally arrived at the start. The hike so far has mainly consisted of hundreds of steps up the steep slopes which has been very hard on our legs. Around 4 hours after we set off this morning, we arrived at a gîte around two-thirds of the way up the mountain, where we'll be spending the night.

We expect to be waking up at around 2am tomorrow morning in order to hike the remaining couple of hours to see the sunset from the summit!
