Summit

I've finally made it home! My legs are extremely painful and I'm sure they're going to hurt a lot more tomorrow!

We left the gîte at 3am this morning, giving us two and a half hours to reach the top before the sunrise. It felt just like I was in one of my dad's climbing documentaries as there were hundreds of people walking single file with head torches all climbing to the top! We managed to get there with around 20 minutes to spare, which turned out to be a bad thing because it was absolutely freezing on the top! It turns out that I had majorly underestimated how cold this island could get, although it was a nice change to be too cold rather than too hot!

After the spectacular sunrise, we went back down to the gîte, by which time it had warmed up a bit, and we could see Mauritius from above the clouds which was very cool. After a short break, we started to go down the mountain and 4 hours later, we made it to the bottom. Unfortunately, Sundays here aren't very good for buses and it took us around 6 hours to take our 4 buses home!

Overall, it was an incredible experience and definitely one that I would recommend - not one I'd do again though!

Piton des Neiges - 10/10
