The commercialism of Christmas

Mono Monday: Christmas "isms"

"Yeah, there's a lot of bad 'isms' floatin' around this world, but one of the worst is commercialism. Make a buck, make a buck. Even in Brooklyn it's the same - don't care what Christmas stands for, just make a buck, make a buck."  Arnold, Macy's Janitor

From "Miracle on 34th Street" (and I am referring to the black and white original with Edmund Gwenn as Kris Kringle, not the later Disney colour version with Richard Attenborough).

For my money, Edmund Gwenn's portrayal of Santa Clause has to be one of the best out there.  It remains one of my top 10 Christmas Films to this day.  My daughter Jess prefers the later Disney colour version with Richard Attenborough and in this, if nothing else,  is a terrible disappointment to me.

This version of Santa from Bristol's Cabot Circus Mall is huge, probably 50 feet or more high.  He's not a bad looking Santa as these things go, although I'm not too sure about the acceptability of his blatently obvious attempt to engender a kiss in return for a Christmas tree  in these days of #metoo.  It is not even as if he has the excuse of some mistletoe to hide behind.  What a terrible world we live in!   :-))
