Seeing Soil
You can't see what you don't understand. But what you think you already understand, you'll fail to notice.
(Another quote from The Overstory, p549.)
We've had proper rain today, almost 3cm of it, absolutely wonderful. But sad to look over at our neighbour's overgrazed land, and see the precious topsoil being swished down to the valley and out into the Lake. Without topsoil, almost impossible to grow food, and we are fast running out of it, here's one article by the WWF.
Which is why we are wondering about not getting rid of our composting toilet, it's certainly helping our soil, and why waste electricity pumping good water to flush a loo?? And we must find a way of digging holes in this hard, rocky ground so we can plant trees where it's bare. And why I don't want our neighbour's sheep grazing here! On the other hand, don't want to offend him...
Gratefuls:
- proper rain, could almost hear the trees rejoicing
- seeing water rushing into the Lake, it's so low
- Mike taking the car into Reguengos to be serviced, in pouring rain and strong winds - and getting back safely
