School Certificate to Cambridge entrance exam
Lorna's route to Girton College is documented in the family album for 1931/2.
In July 1932 Lorna took Higher School Certificate exams in English, French and Latin. We assume that these were the equivalent of A levels.
In August her hard work was recognised with a distinction for her work in English. Perhaps this is the equivalent of an A* in A level English?
One month later, Lorna found out that she had been awarded a State Scholarship. These scholarships were prestigious grants from central government to support University study. They were offered between 1920 and 1962, as noted on Wikipedia.
Towards the end of 1932, Lorna prepared for the scholarship exam for the University of Cambridge.
