Skye

With all day to work my way North to the ferry at Uig, I took in a few archaeologicla sites on Northern Skye. This gravestone was one of several at the impressive Skeabost Church site.
c1134 AD a new see was created from several earlier Norse sees. The monks of Furness Abbey the right to elect the new bishop. They chose Wimund, one of their own number.
However Wimund does not seem to have been suited to the ecclesiastical life, for in 1147 he became a seafaring adventurer. He attacked the Bishop of Whithorn, but was captured, blinded and castrated. He spent the rest of his life at Byland Abbey in Yorkshire, which is exactly where my blip of December 29th was posted from!
The medieaval world was clealry a small one.
