2020 Wednesday — Someday
I really like the word “someday.” My mom used to speak it with so much energy and exuberance; she had the same kind of excitement that kids have when they stand in front of a Christmas tree as she spoke it. Mom knew “someday” was filled with hope; at least hers was. So I “caught” my attitude about “someday” from Mom.
For almost the entire six years that I attended college as an older than average reentry student, I would at home vocalize, “‘Someday’ I’m going to be a professor at RCC!” That desire was such a long shot; a ridiculous wish for a gal who had dropped-out of high school after 10th grade. And if all my friends were truthful, I had maybe three who believed I’d “blown out all the candles in one breath” and the wish would be mine (I know who those three are — I won’t name you).
So on June 4, 1991, after a grueling season of numerous interviews, at the end of the day I arrived home to announce, “‘Someday’ happened today!” My final interview happened that day in the Office of the President of Riverside Community College, and Dr. Charles Kane had offered me a full-time position as professor in the English department. I knew God had answered many prayers.
Okay, that’s all history and everyone knows that story and after 30 years of teaching I’m retiring and soon will be Professor Emeritus.
So what about ‘someday’? Well for the past 8 or 10 months I’ve been teasing Mr. Fun that “‘Someday’ l’m going to get an old truck maybe even an old clunky truck for Hank’s House,” (that’s the name of our old Cayucos house).
So the photo here is something I saw today. I think it’s what “someday” might look like in our driveway. Yes, I’ll paint it purple!
“It’s a girl, my Lord
In a flatbed Ford”
It’s not “For Sale” and
it’s not mine.
But “someday”!?!
