Wellingtonia trees
I was in Shropshire today and happened upon a National Trust sign for Sunnycroft.
I turned in and was greeted by this long line of huge trees. Sadly the house was closed but I have researched the property and found the trees are called Wellingtonias. In the late 19th century this name was given to them by John Lindley of the Horticultural Society who was assigned the task of naming them in Britain, and although they were native to California, he opted for the 'wellingtonia gigantea' to commemorate the recently deceased Duke of Wellington. The Americans were not happy with this and ultimately it was named Sequoiadendron giganteum to reflect the tree's botanical link to the coastal or Californian redwood.
Oh, and the house is a Victorian villa, described as a mini country estate. See extra.
