Light Pollution

As someone who enjoys astronomy, my back garden is far from ideal as an observing site. My neighbours leave porch lights, security lights, landing lights, basically every light they can, on all night. In addition there are several street lights which cast beams of brightness into the garden making things even worse.
A survey is being carried out to measure light pollution wherever you may live. You simply count the number of stars that can be seen with the naked eye bounded by the four 'corner stars' of Orion. At a pristine dark site more than 30 stars can be seen. From my garden I can see 7.
