Floods, floods, floods

I've been thinking about changing my car when the lease-purchase thingy comes to a conclusion, this summer. I'd like to get away from diesel for a start. Purely electric is too risky with the miles I put in - I'd need to charge the car so often - but hybrid could be OK. And maybe, I've thought, I'll get something a bit smaller, especially now that Dan is learning to drive. 

My thinking changed on the way to work, this morning. The Minx had seen on the Kirkby Lonsdale Facebook page that the A65 was badly flooded, so once she'd alerted me to that, I took the Oxenholme Road to work. The flooding was a bad but I knew there would be a lot less traffic and no long queues before the submerged bits of road. Even so, I nearly didn't make it and had to take a detour around one stretch of road. I certainly wouldn't have fancied trying it in a smaller car. 

After the floods in 2007, which seems to have been the first instance of major flooding in this country caused by climate change, Sir Michael Pitt carried out a review which recommended a huge investment in flood protection. The Labour government put quite a bit of money into it but they were on their way out of the door and the report and its recommendations has been ignored by the Tories ever since. 

I can't see that attitude changing anytime soon - Johnson has yet to show his face at any of the flooded areas - so while I may move to hybrid, I think I'll be sticking with a large car!
