Escaping

The Argyll and The Isles Diocesan Synod took place today, yesterday's gathering having been for the Conference that has become the tradition over the past 15 or so years, providing a focus for a diocese whose representatives have to travel from the length of Scotland to Oban - making the journey worth while, as it were. This is all a fine idea, but for this visitor - because I was there only as an alternate, and would have been needed only if my pal, who is the actual Lay Rep of our congregation, had been unable to function (this has happened). This year I felt I was barely functioning, as I find the two days of unremitting socialising, working, worshipping and food almost too much.

So that was the first way in which the moment I've blipped was an escape, as I managed out for a brief walk in the bitingly chilly fresh air. Our meetings have in recent years been held at the Marine Research Station (it has a different name these days) at Dunbeg, on the road out of Oban, so when you slip out at lunchtime it is possible to find yourself on a deserted beach with a glorious view. This one looks north and west.

The other escape wasn't wanted, but is happening, as this was the last Synod for our Bishop Kevin (the one in yesterday's blip). The day ended with an emotional speech from the Bishop, and a presentation by one of his oldest friends in the gathering. There were hugs and tears and regret as we wished him well in his new post; I think we felt he will always be our bishop, regardless of what he's called.

And then there was the drive home through the snowy hills. The views are always better on the run home from Oban to Dunoon, so I've included one of the photos I took through the windscreen.
