Fritillary and Frogspawn
Went to the allotment early this morning, we did well again getting in our second bed of potatoes and digging other beds. I also sorted out the raspberry bed.
There are always nice surprises at the allotment and today it was the fritillaries flowering, and also frogspawn in the pond-see extra.
Fritillary are one of my favorite flowers. See below for some info about their name-
The name Fritillaria comes from the Latin fritillus meaning dice-box, possibly referring to the chequered pattern on the flowers although this derivation has been disputed. The name meleagris means "spotted like a guineafowl". The common name "snake's head" probably refers to the somewhat snakelike appearance of the nodding flower heads, especially when in bud, on their long stems.
