Darkness!
My Dear Princess and Dear Fellows,
Today I was sitting at the kitchen desk, trying to do some actual, real, work, no honestly. As you can see Jasper came to "help".
And then I got totally distracted listening to Feefs and Caro chatting on the phone. Mainly because of a peculiar expression they used.
They were talking about Jacinda and how much they love her. We all tune in for her daily lunchtime briefings and she is very good. But today she stepped it up further still!
The background to this is that her health minister has been a bloody idiot and broken quarantine rules to go out on his push bike. Not a good look for the sodding HEALTH MINISTER.
(Mind you, the leader of the opposition has been driving up and down the country, but as we all know the rules don't apply to you if you are right-wing and an @rsehole.)
So anyway, Jacinda has been under pressure to do something about Health Minister and so she has DEMOTED him. She spoke at length about this today and she was NOT complimentary.
"Oooh, she gone DARK on him," said Feefs with delight. "Oooh! Listen to her. She's gone DARK!"
It is true, by the way. Watch this. "He offered up his pathetic resignation but she wouldn't f*cken let him off the hook!" said Caro with grim satisfaction. This was as Jacinda went on, using the tones of a parent when they tell you how "disappointed" they are with your recent behaviour*.
That's it, Health Minister. Game's a bogey! She's gone DARK!
I found this expression very funny. But I knew instantly what Feefs meant by the context. The sheen is off. The honeymoon is over. Your card's been marked, you're on a shoogly peg AND yer bum's oot the windae.
SHE'S GONE DARK ON YOU.
Which reminds me. I'm also very fond of how the Kiwis and Australians use the word "filthy". As in, "I was so pissed off! I was FILTHY!"
I think it is fair to say that Jacinda was both dark AND filthy today.
You know, it's strange. I have been here for two and a half years now, and I still find the ways of the locals funny.
Mind you, I still find you lot bloody hilarious as well. You, with your "black affronted" and your "dookin' fer chips".
That sheen never came off.
S.
* I think we can all agree that being told your parents were "disappointed" in you was WAY worse than getting a bollocking.
