On Patrol

We caught up with the Rower's daughter for lunch today down at Glenelg. (It was her birthday yesterday). Glenelg has several claims to fame, the first being it's a palindrome, and second being the place where South Australia was proclaimed a colony in 1836.

Absolutely glorious day down there, and Adelaide being the place that it is, the beach was almost deserted. We have miles and miles and miles of golden sand, so even the most popular beaches are quiet by British and European standards.

This is the local surf lifesaving beach patrol. Even given that this is one of the safest beaches on the planet. And that the surf was - oooh, all of 2 inches (today at any rate). And we can get sharks circling on occasion. And the water does get rough. Not today though, so I think the lifesavers had it pretty easy.

The original 1859 Glenelg jetty was washed away in a freak cyclone in 1948, and the replacement wasn't built for another 20 years. The present jetty was opened in 1969, and this is the one we see today.
