1. The day starts with blue skies and possibly the finest hotel room view known to man. We get going with a right good fry up in the rather lovely dining room in the hotel, once again bathed in sunshine and in full view of the castle. It's great to feel like a tourist in this town.

2. We spend some time in the Portrait Gallery, the BP portraits especially, which are gorgeous. We hang out in the library for a while then move on.

3. Coffees in Valvona and Crolla then the Fruitmarket, City Arts Centre and Ingleby. The exhibition upstairs in the Ingleby makes me burst out laughing and there's a set of plates for sale that I love. If I ever have a spare £1200 they'll be coming home with me.

4. Lunch in the National Gallery at the Mound and a quickish mooch round the old masters before a stroll through the Grassmarket to the Red Squirrel on Lothian Road, where we bump into a host of folk all heading where we are.

5. Which is to the Traverse again, for the second night of the Traverse 50. This photo is taken as the actors take a bow and salute the 50 writers whose image is projected up behind them. An out and out VERY good thing. Very good indeed.
