Day 37. - Jerome Kern
Cycled to Walton on Thames to find some ‘unofficial’ blue plaques. Although I am familiar with many of his songs I did not know much about Kern. Jerome Kern (1885-1945) was an American composer who wrote more than 700 songs , used in over 100 stage productions. Classics include ‘Ol Man river’, Smoke gets in your eyes’ , ‘The way you look tonight ’ and ‘ A fine romance’. In 1909 when he was in England he took a boat trip to Walton in Thames with friends where they went for a drink at the Swan pub. He was taken with the proprietor’s daughter Eva Leale who was working behind the bar. He wooed her and they were married in 1910. The extra shows the pub.
