Herb paris

Paris quadrifolia

Above its four broad leaves is a star of four very narrow yellow-green petals and four wider sepals topped by a crown of eight golden stamens and a shining black berry.

Its name has nothing to do with the French capital but comes from the Latin “par” meaning equal.

Occasionally you can find plants with five or six leaves. I have found some “fivers” in Gait Barrows National Nature Reserve.

The extra is a very British Trig point on top of Arnside Knott
