On the Pond
It’s been another lovely day which wasn’t at all what we were expecting!
Our walk today was led by a mission. I received an early email from our choir leader asking if we were passing his back door on one of our walks could I drop in his concertina. He had loaned it to me for our Easter piece of music which of course we didn’t do. I offered him it back before but he didn’t need it. Now he is working on a piece of music that requires it.
Taking it was no problem, we rang him when we reached the cricket field to let him know when we would be there as he is working at home. It made me laugh when we got to the fields has he was waving a flag made from a stick and a yellow scarfe in case we weren’t sure which back garden it was. I put the strap of the concertina case on the pole for him to haul it in!
From there we walked up into the St Ives woods and on to Coppice Pond. We took duck and swan food with us and am a bit concerned that it is getting low. Where and when will I get some more?
There were very few birds wanting our food as it turned out. A couple of ducks and the male swan here near the island. I wanted this shot as the Rhodedenron is out at the moment and it‘s colour reflects in the water. Just to the right of it you can see the clear route the swans are taking on to the island as they are nesting. You may just be able to pick out the speck of white in the foliage that is the pen on her nest too.
There were a few Coots and Moorhens around too including one on it’s nest. It was scary to see how vociferously a Coot ’set about’ a couple of Moorhens who were also after our food. After photographing the nest I saw the Coot come off it to chase a way another nearby bird. The order seems to be that everybody chases somebody else. Soon after taking my shots the swan was off chasing a way a Canada goose, I’m surprised there are some still around as he never gives up. The two Greylags I saw last week were no where in sight and they were being set upon by the Canada geese on Friday!
The way of the wild!
At the far side of the pond we got a shout and wave from Wendles56 as she flew by on the path. Completed our walk through the woods and returned via the cricket field seeing quite a number of other people that we know allowing for some pleasant, distance chats.
These walks and chats are getting us through.
Stay safe folks.
