A Bit of the Crimean?
According to the information on the plaque next to this cannon it's a bit of booty from the Crimean War! Apparently it wasn't unusual to see a large piece of defunct Russian artillery adorning municipal parks or in front of some grand civic building in the UK in the nineteenth century....
This one was presented to the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme in 1857 by the MP Samuel Christy. It was moved to this location, in Brampton Park ,just outside the museum building, in 1965.
Another strange find on our daily exercise. It's amazing what you see when you're wrapped in a piece of metal on wheels.
