Where are all the insects?

We live surrounded by Big Farmer. Given the amount of spraying that goes on, it might as well be Big Pharma. Year on year the insects have declined noticeably.

Cutting the grass today I made sure to leave plenty of food for the few carder bees we do have, so they don't need to forage beyond the fence.
