Sunny Sussex

St Catherine's of Siena, Cocking parish church, on a lovely sunny day. You can see the components of many blips here, the mistletoe tree, the snowdrops, gravestones and Victorian iron crosses. Today's pic also shows the memorial to the fallen of two world wars, and the two gates into the south side of the churchyard. The black iron gate is a kissing gate, which stops animals entering, and contrary to my childhood belief does not mean you should kiss the person you are with as you pass through, but simply that the gate swinging in its curved enclosure kisses one side and then the other. The wooden gate between the two pillars would originally be for horse riders. There is no vehicular access to the church at either side, so parking in the lanes on a Sunday is a muddy affair. The wall and pillars are, of course, local flint.
A lot of the greenery on the left hand side will no doubt be lost in the course of the next few months [or even weeks] as the large house behind is renovated. When I was taking these photographs this morning, a local woman asked me if I was recording events to keep an eye on the development. Not so, but nice to be able to record the trees one more time.
