C2C day 11 Blakey Ridge to Grosmont

Out at 9 am for a walk to the penultimate stop on the route. We started with road work for the first 4 miles. It got that boring that when we should have turned off we just kept on going, talking to other C2Cers. We had to make a diversion to get back on the route.

We spent most of the day with Tony and Eddie, grandfather  and grandson from Ohio, in the USA.  A bit of an age gap, 72 and 18.  We came off the Moor, Passing Fryup dale and then entering the pretty village of Glaisdale.  Highlight of the walk up to then was definitely spotting an adder in the undergrowth.  Ross provided the picture.

We then followed the river Esk through Egton Bridge before arriving in Grosmont at about 2:30 pm.  Tony and Eddie were introduced to the tradition of a cream tea before they headed off to Little Beck.

Grosmont has a steam railway line in the centre of the village.  We decided that a short trip to the coast was in order and set off for Whitby.  It was with disappointment that the engine pulling our train was a diesel circa 1970s.  Whitby was surprisingly picturesque, the sky line dominated by its ruined abbey.  We enjoyed fish and chips on the harbour front before a quick walk up the 199 steps (more climbing) to the abbey.  We also noted that a rather plush looking YHA was adjacentto the abbey.  We tried to check it out but couldn't get in.  It might have changed our view of these establishments!

We returned at 7:15 pm and then updated the log.
