Green shoots

I guess that on average Dan and I do the walk around Casterton just over once a week but today is the first time we have seen any golfers. That's because of the lockdown easing, of course, and no great surprise but all the same was a nice, gentle suggestion that we might be moving back to reality. Maybe these were some "green shoots".

Unfortunately, Norman Lamont was my MP when I was growing up and I recalled today his use of the term "green shoots" when talking about an economic recovery. I was surprised to find, while writing this, that he is actually credited with the first use of the term in an economic context. Additionally, the Wikipedia entry states that "More recently, the term has also been used in the United Kingdom in relation to the slowing spread of Coronavirus disease during the 2020 pandemic." (I don't think they were referring to me, though.)

How things will go back to normal is one of the topics Dan and I return to on our daily walks. I worry that rather than it just being of intellectual interest, he is actually looking to me for some reassurance, so it's nice to have little occurrences such as today's golfers to point to. Baby steps, for sure, but in the right direction.

Also on the subject of green shoots, I think the willow arch that the Minx planted in the garden is sprouting or whatever it is they do (see Extra).

Reading: 'Underland' by Robert Macfarlane (Yet again I appear to have found myself with a book that I'm not picking up.)
