Lorna's father in 1943

There are only snippets of information in Lorna's diary about her father Albert's service during World War II. This is probably because Lorna herself had no knowledge of his activities. We know so far, for example, that her father's first departure for war was under sealed orders.

This photograph and its inscription, however, tells us a little about his travels in 1943.

Lagos 1943

Expecting to fly from Lagos via Marrakech and Lisbon. It was necessary to pass through Portugal as a civilian, hence the borrowed coat of the photographer.


According to some, Lisbon was the Capital of Espionage during the second world war. So might we even wonder whether Lorna's father was active in military intelligence? That the family moved in the mid-1930s from Sheffield to Malvern - the home of the Government Code and Cypher School (now GCHQ) - adds fuel to the fires of our imagination...
