Protesting
Quite an eventful day! We got wind of a “Black Lives Matter” protest gathering in a park near us, so despite not knowing what to expect, we decided to attended, as long as we could keep to physical distancing and wearing masks of course. We are both keen to make a stand of some sort to declare that we oppose the oppression and injustice going on.
The event was organized by a 17 year old girl! There were some very eloquent speeches from some youth, police officers and a local pastor. But what made the greatest impression on me was the 8 minutes of silence the crowd, mostly down on one knee, were led in as we thought of how George Floyd must have felt during those horrendous minutes as his life ebbed away . There were prayers and promises from the police to take action to make sure this kind of behavior by the officers here at least doesn’t happen.
Then I got a phone call from Jamie letting us know that a couple of people in their church and in fact, on the worship team which they have been in close contact with were sick with Covid19 like symptoms and were waiting for their test results. I’m not sure what happens next if they are found to test positive, but we could see something like this coming and tried to warn them!
