Vanity
The ancient trackway which is Chapmans Lane has a sunken section some 300 yards in length towards its junction with Imberhorne Lane.
At first glimpse this looks a natural feature worn by hundreds of passing charts, horses and human feet. But no, it was ordered to be dug by Lady Blount as it allowed those passing to be seen from her drawing room.
Because its man made the sides are prone to slip so when the adjacent houses were built 60 or so years ago small sections of retaining wall had to be built to stop sections of garden disappearing. Over that time trees have become established and the threat much reduced.
