Clearly Meandering

Famine

Currently reading this book by John Kelly - a harrowing account of the Irish famine, brilliantly researched and exquisitely written.

I took a break and walked the streets of Conakry for a short while this afternoon and saw people that reminded me of characters in the book and I was thrown back in time: beggars on the streets, mothers with want in their eyes as their children stare in hope and men with thin frames who once were more.

Can't help but think of the Sahel crisis in West and central Africa and also the continuing undeclared famine in Ethiopia. Shouldn't be.
