Empty

We spent much of the morning weeding and covering the soil of a flowerbed with wood chips.  In the process we discovered this small nest, about the size of a hand.  It will have fallen from next door's ash trees that overhang that bed.

The craft that went into the manufacture of this little nest was amazing, with feathers and vegetation making up the bulk of the materials but with moss on the underside as well.

From its size I'd guess that it was a small tit's nest and we think that the young fledged over a week ago, judging by the flying balls of fluff we've seen in other trees.  Edit: however, a man who knows has told us that it's a goldfinch nest; goldfinches are on the increase it seems.
