Slowly coming back to life.

The National Trust is gently reopening parts of the glorious parkland around our beautiful stately homes.  I managed tickets for this week too ( booked at 5.00am on Friday last : they go on sale just after midnight) and set off for Calke Abbey in spite of a worrying weather forecast. It was seriously damp and muggy.

It was stunning, but during the lockdown they’ve only been allowed two staff. The band of marvellous volunteers and skilled gardeners have plenty of work to return to. The long grass around the church and near the mansion will be relatively quick to deal with. The Ice House will be another matter. 

It was quiet and very special this morning. The wildflower meadow had thrived without their careful attention and it was lush and gorgeous if not an array of colour. The formal garden was neatly mowed and they’ve clearly put lots of work into the vegetable garden. 

A strict one way system. Two toilet blocks. No cafe or shop and no buggies. 

I felt so privileged to be there, with no more than a handful of other visitors.
