Today's the day ……………………. to dig a trench

Joy of joys! - the Tongland Abbey Archaeological Dig re-commenced today for the new season.

And it was straight in at the deep end - once we had been instructed in the new Covid19 safety guidelines to which we will have to adhere.  But everyone was more than willing to wear a facemask and keep 2m apart.  We were just eager to get going.  The new trenches were waiting for us to begin - cleverly positioned with the knowledge gained last year to confirm that we've got the layout of the Abbey correct.  

And very quickly, what may be some sort of cobbled stone surface, appeared out of the soil.  If things go to plan, somewhere in this trench will be a stone-clad drainage ditch, which brought water into the Abbey.
