Green thing

We took a bus out to just beyond the city by-pass (aka the outer darkness) and walked a mile or two back along the Water of Leith as far as the visitor centre. The river was very rushing and busy - there used to be mills all the way along it with the water powering various useful little industries.

This pipe across the river (don't like to ask what it contains) has a sort of green pinwheel affair covered with ivy that has always appealed to me - I guess the structure is to dissuade children from trying to walk along the pipe. Maybe it works; further upstream we saw a party of kids + dog attempting to swing across the river on an old piece of wood tied to a rope. Looked like potential for a learning experience about the breaking strain of old wood, the behaviour of a pendulum, or at worst hypothermia....
