Broadleaved Dock
Rumex obtusifolius. This dock leaf was lolling out of the bank like a giant tongue as I passed by on a walk. Something had been nibbling at it but didn't stop to examine it. In this country the Broadleaved Dock comes under the UK Weeds Act of 1959 but it has its uses: besides relieving nettle stings, one can eat and cook the young leaves in the same manner as spinach.
Rain at last! We had one and half inches of rain last evening and all through the night which would have done the farm a lot of good. The grass will start growing again for the cattle and the grain hopefully will begin to swell. The field beans are now in pod and I picked a few for supper, they are nearly exactly the same as broad beans in look and taste. They were delicious!
