Giving In To Winter

The male ferns die down in winter. They gradually turn yellow, then brown.

Another cool, dark day, but it didn’t rain fortunately. A colleague of my son’s had invited us to help our selves to as much horse manure as we wanted. I wanted to spread some on the asparagus bed. She seemed disappointed when we arrived with a small car and a couple of plastic sacks. She said she was hoping we would have a trailer at least. When we saw the heap we understood. (See extra shot, which was part of the heap). We were provided with several sturdy sacks and we loaded the boot. You couldn’t see where we took it from.

Back home I spread generous layers on the asparagus bed and on the big tubs I grow runner and dwarf beans in. They will have 4 or 5 months for the manure to break down before use. And there a two big bags in reserve.
