Taxman

Was going to go out for a run when the heavens opened, so cancelled that and decided to do one of those jobs that I knew wouldn’t take long but just haven’t been able to work up any enthusiasm for.
Despite the country being in full lockdown in the middle of April, Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs still managed to send out the annual notice telling me to complete a tax return for 2019/20.
My accountant was working from home so I said I’d delay submitting the paperwork for a little while, whilst the firm got used to that way of working.
As it happened, this turned out to be the most “normal” activity of anything I have done during lockdown, as nothing was different to previous years. I scanned all the relevant pieces of paper - P60, Dividend Vouchers, etc - and then emailed them to the accountant with details of anything else affecting tax that had occurred in the last year. Exactly the same as I did last year and the years before that!
And, in due course, I will be emailed a completed return to check and sign electronically. As usual I will hope that nothing has been missed and that the taxman will not be demanding anything extra!
I suppose the only difference this year is that the accountant’s response was to say it wouldn’t be done straight away as they were dealing with furlough claims. As we’ve got until January next year to submit the actual return, I don’t think a short delay will cause the Inland Revenue inspectors any sleepless nights!
