Lamplight Kingdom

My cycling chum Ron happened upon an industrial estate with a display of old lamp columns up near Ware so naturally I was curious to see for myself.

This morning we made a midsummer ride up the river Lea to make a repeat visit (Ron) and a discovery (me).

Off the canal, over a bridge, across a level crossing and through a housing estate and suddenly there we were. Dozens of old lampposts all planted around the buildings. Cast iron , concrete  and steel ones. Ornate and plain. Even one or two gas lamps. They are the historical display of Concrete Utilities, now CU Phosco who have evolved into a major company manufacturing lighting columns for sports stadiums, ports and airports around the world.

Good for them that they have kept these historical samples that helped make the winters a little easier by illuminating the murky streets.

It was difficult to work out the best angle to get a picture but at the last minute we saw this reflection in a recent building at the centre of the exhibition. So summer or winter, an efficient lamp column has made life a little easier and safer over the last 150 years.
