Back from the Laundry
Another box of old treasures from Dad's Loft.
My sister had put a lot of "memorabilia " in Mom and Dad's loft and of course she is no longer here to claim it. I got this box down the other day having had a brief glance inside it. On the bottom of the inside of the box is a sticky label which says that the box is guaranteed for use for 2 years from January 1955. It's done well. It's a laundry box as you can see from the Smethwick Laundry in Dale Street. I don't really know how they came to be in the possession of the family because I don't think they would have been able to afford to send the laundry out. Nobody left to ask.
Over the years, these boxes have done great service for storing summer then winter clothes in turn and there is different writing on them, some my mom's , some my sister's. The label on the top is the most recent writing from my sister because she stored new born baby clothes in there in anticipation of grandchildren. I took them all out today. Some have not stood the test of 30 odd years well, but there are some lovely knitted shawls and little cardigans. I think the box contains a special outfit but I don't know what if was for. I don't think it was for a christening, but it might have been. Of course they were all rather musty so I have washed them all this afternoon, aired them and they are now ready for the mother of my sister's long awaited grandchild to have a look through to see if there is anything she would like to keep.
We shall see. Maybe she will like one or two of them.
