Chamois, Caught in the Act!
Chamois are not often seen in bright sunlight (we had sun for 20 minutes today) or on farmers' fields or in the middle of the morning! They normally hide in cliffs and forests but at this time of the year they must be very hungry. I guess that's why they were having breakfast between two roads today. Can you imagine that people used to use chamois leather to polish their windows? Now, though they are not common, they are no longer hunted to the extent they used to be, so there are many large herds in the Alps. Of all the big mammals in the Alps, chamois are my favourite and we're lucky to have a couple of small groups living in the forest near home.
They are a long way off so "large" is not too good.
If you would like to see more of our family, they are here:

Chamois 2 (The best one.)
