St James' Church Louth
Louth is very proud of its parish church which gets a mention in Pevsner and in Simon Jenkins 1000 best churches. It has the tallest spire on a medieval parish church in Britain and is 295 feet high dominating the local landscape. The current spire was completed in 1515 and then the weathercock placed on top of the spire was made from the great copper basin taken from the Scots at the Battle of Flodden. On the 13th September 1515 the Spire was consecrated and there were great celebrations 'there will be some sore heads in the morning as free ale was given out!' The total cost of building the spire was £305 8s and 5d!! In 1824 a new weathercock was provided.
You can go up the spire - so maybe when the weather gets better I'll climb up and take a blip from there.
A lovely sunny morning but as I write this the snow is hurtling down - oh dear.
