Surf's up!

Today we spent the morning traipsing to Siccar point, arguably the most important geological place in the world (according to the blurb we read). It did, to be fair, mark a very important moment in history and the discovery of Hutton's unconformity. This refers to the rocks at Siccar Point (near Pease Bay) which are separated by an unconformity: an ancient geological sequence. The Siccar Point unconformity is clearly visible as an etched junction with the dark grey vertical rocks underneath and the much younger, almost horizontal red rocks on top. Up to the point of this discovery (which was heavily contested by the Church of the time), it was thought the Earth was created in 4004 BC, as calculated by bishop Ussher in 1650. Hutton proved however that the Earth was in fact at least 400 million years old (we now know it to be around 4.5 billion years old).

Today's blip is however of the harbour wall in Cove with some big waves creating some drama. The extras include some example of the different coloured rocks at and near Siccar Point. Mrs P needless to say claimed she was getting Siccar the more I regaled her with the history of this moment in time!
