Revisit

I am currently following an interesting Future Learn course on Modern Sculpture:An introduction to Art History. (This is very up to date as it deals with monuments and the toppling of monuments!)  I wondered about sculptures around here and remembered the Eden Benchmarks. I couldn't believe it was so long ago that I first 'collected' the ten sculptures, all close to the River Eden from source to sea. That happened in 2012, during my first year of blipping, eight years ago. I decided a revisit was in order.

On our way back from Penrith we stopped off at Temple Sowerby to find 'Red River'. The A66 used to go through the village and trying to cross it was very difficult - now, with the building of the bypass, the village has returned to being a tranquil place with a quiet road running through it. To get to the sculpture you have to follow a footpath by the side of a farm, cross a field and then over a stile to another field, which was full of cows, on the banks of the river.

'Red River' overlooks the river and it is a nice spot to sit and watch the water. It was created by sculptor Victoria Brailsford out of Lazonby Sandstone, reflecting the sandstone cliffs, which you can just see through the trees in this photo, and is based on the river valley geology with its contours and shifting sands. The spheres are reminiscent of pebbles or grains of sand.

The extra photo was taken looking the other way towards the A66, the Temple Sowerby bypass.

It was interesting to see it again, as the last time we had two little girls with us, who just wanted to jump around on it.
