Burgeoning

A few weeks ago, ahead of some works on the windows and at the front of the house, I radically pruned back the camellias on either side of the bay window. We planted them over 30 years ago and they had reached a height of 2.5 metres.

In fact, radical was not the word. Brutal was more appropriate with only the main stems left.

For the past few weeks I’ve been looking for signs of life. To my relief, the occasional bud tip began to appear the other week. Today, on one of the plants, I noticed what seemed like a rash. On closer inspection it is numerous bud tips about to burst through.

While we may not have flowers next year I am more confident now that they will survive.
