Tadcaster Viaduct

Today's bike ride took me through Wetherby and down to the recently completed cycle path connecting  with viaduct over the River Wharfe just south of Thorpe Arch. I then continued to Tadcaster (home of Sam Smith's brewery).
The Tadcaster Viaduct crosses the River Wharfe just north of Tadcaster town. It was built for the Leeds and York railway line which was intended to connect Leeds and York. A rival line was also being built at about the same time. Unfortunately, in 1848 when the viaduct was complete, construction of the line which was to pass over the viaduct was abandoned. The viaduct has therefore never had a line across it.
It is possible to access the viaduct from the west, but at the eastern end it is necessary to take some steps down to the side to get back to ground level. I therefore didn't cycle across and went through Tadcaster itself. Having looked into it, it would appear there has been a bit of a dispute concerning access across land to the east of the viaduct which resulted, a few years ago, in the construction of a wall across the end of the path where it meets the road again!
